Rings are No Joke...
Getting humbled by calisthenics one rep at a time.
Welcome to MeowMed’s Musings where I’m coming at you with another short and sweet nugget of self-improvement.
These last couple of weeks, I have been making progress in several exercises like shoulder presses, pullups, and dips. I had a pair of sturdy wooden gymnastics rings sitting in my closet waiting to be tried out. One of my fitness friends said that using rings could be a useful way to progress in some calisthenics/bodyweight movements. And boy oh boy, was he right.
Ever wonder why gymnasts have extremely ripped arms? They aren’t benching or squatting hundreds of pounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Ronnie Coleman…at least not in the conventional manner. You see, due to the free movement of the rings compared to something stationary such as a pullup bar or dip bars, you have to recruit extra muscles for stabilization. It requires a TREMENDOUS amount of strength.
I can do about 15 reps of dipping my bodyweight. However, with my feet on the floor for assistance, I could only do 8 painfully shaky reps. As I type this newsletter, I can feel tiny pulsations of my triceps and chest. This is a pump.
You can probably experience something similar with a TRX system. Definitely worth a try, in my opinion, if certain bodyweight movements are becoming easy for you.
That’s pretty much all I wanted to discuss. Have you ever tried your hand at challenging calisthenics movements? I’d love to hear about that and more—feel free to reply to this email!
